Too many people have jumped on the weight loss bandwagon and are wanting to make a quick buck from the unsuspecting person who is desperate to lose weight. There are thousands of books available on the subject from the genuine scientifically researched methods to the fast weight loss fad diets. It is essential that obese and overweight individuals are given correct advice if they are to lose weight effectively and sustain that weight loss in the future. As a nutritionist who has struggled to keep my weight manageable I have done a lot of research into the truths and myths of losing weight. There are no easy answers but there are some fundamental facts that I would like to share with you that may help to make your weight loss journey a little less stressful and hopefully more successful.

In order to fully understand the enormity of the weight loss phenomena, a few statistics might help to put things into perspective.

  • 48% in Europe are overweight
  • 300 million world wide are obese
  • 700 million worldwide are overweight
  • The weight loss market was due to hit $61 billion in 2008
  • 400,000 deaths a year may be attributed to obesity

In addition to these statistics more than 40 million children under the age of five were overweight in 2010. (according to WHO). Obesity is now an epidemic and any genuine tips for losing weight should be adhered to before it is too late.

Weight loss has become a massive industry. Sadly overall it is an industry that is more interested in making money from overweight people than helping them to overcome their problem. Consequently much of the advice on offer will serve only to encourage fast weight loss that will inevitably go back on just as fast and result in the yo yo dieter who is a regular ongoing customer for the weight loss industry.Healthy Options

However there are weight loss experts out there who genuinely want to offer sound advice and help our overweight population understand why they are overweight in the first place and what they can do to help themselves to overcome their problem. Very often the best weight loss gurus are those who have battled with a weight loss problem themselves and have researched and discovered the best ways to lose weight.

If you do your research you will find that those people who are offering a holistic approach to weight loss will all be singing from the same hymn sheet. They will all be telling you the same thing.

  1. My first tip for losing weight would have to be to keep away from any diet fad diet that involves eating single foods like grapefruits. These diet will only serve to starve the body and create problems that will have to be addressed once the diet has been completed. With many fad diets the amazing weight loss experienced in the first couple of weeks is more likely to be a combination of water and muscle loss than fat loss especially if the diet forces the body into starvation mode due to insufficient calories and/or nutrients. This weight will go back on again as soon as normal eating resumes

  2. Secondly, ensure that your diet is well balanced and contains sufficient protein to encourage the body to convert its fat stores into lean muscle. Our bodies are complex mechanisms that require the correct ratios of nutrients if they are to function optimally. Good quality home cooked food will go a long way to help you to lose weight efficiently

  3. Although many health gurus will tell you not to skip breakfast, or any meal for that matter, there is now a body of nutritionists that believe that intermittent fasting can actually aid your weight loss, infact it can help you to lose weight fast and can also improve your overall health Read this blog post for more information on Intermittent Fasting 

  4.  Fourthly, include an exercise regime in your weight loss program. This is an essential tip for losing weight, even though some diets say that it is not necessary. Weight bearing exercises will enhance the bodies ability to convert fat into lean muscle. Also as muscle is more metabolically active than fat, it will help to speed up the metabolic process and help to burn fat more quickly. There is also a move for "less is more" exercise.  I will cover this in more detail in a future post. 

  5.  My final tip for losing weight is to ensure that you are in the correct frame of mind. Motivation and positive thinking are very important elements in the weight loss process. Try to think like a slim person, then very likely you will be more inclined to act and eat like one.

  1. Janet great tips. I have experienced hugh benefit from intermittent fasting. I believe most overweight people fail to understand the reasons behind their overweight. Their bodies may be very toxic so the cells have limited ability to take in nutrition even if they ate better. My Wellness Practitioner recommends 1 cleansing the large and small intestine 2. Reducing inflammation in the body 3. Reducing cell toxicity. High levels of cell toxicity lead to major illness.

  2. That’s great advice Michael. Inflammation causes so many problems, as does high level toxicity. I read somewhere recently that cancer tumours are an accumulation of toxins!!! Detoxing and cleansing are so important for good health and are both something we should do on a regular basis.

    What a lot of people fail to realise is that it really isn't necessary to 'go on a diet' to lose weight.

    The simplest and guaranteed way to lose those extra pounds is:

    1. Eat Less

    2. Exercise More

    I recently watched a documentary on UK TV about a reporter who went to US to research the idea of fasting. He tried out the methods he discovered and found that fasting for three days per week and eating normally the rest of the time had some amazing medical benefits as well as the side benefit of losing extra pounds.

    Sadly, I don't have the self discipline to fast 🙂

  4. Karen – it isn’t as difficult as you might imagine. I did the fasting diet for 2 months last year and lost several pounds without any effort. I fasted for 2 days a week, but the fasting day was a reduced calorie day rather than no food, so I was able to have lots of soup from lunch time onwards. I thought I would struggle because I hate being hungry, but that didn’t happen. I have also kept the weight off 

  5. Glad to hear your views on intermittant fasting Janet as I have never been able to eat breakfast. It makes sense when you think our ancestors used to skip meals all the time when they couldn't hunt for it. It certainly makes more sense than overeating!

  8. I agree that exercise is important but it m,ust be the right exercise. I also agree that you should avoid junk food, but I think that eating less can be problematic, as the body can go into starvation mode if there are insufficient calories
